US steel imports fall; India shipments jump

## Decline in US Steel Imports

In 2025, the United States saw a 12.6% decrease in steel imports compared to the previous year. This decline was highlighted by a significant reduction in overall steel purchases from various global suppliers.

## Surge in Indian Steel Shipments

Despite the overall drop, steel imports from India to the US surged by over 118% in 2025. This increase marks a notable shift in the US's sourcing patterns, with India emerging as a key supplier.

## Other Major Suppliers

Canada remained the largest supplier of steel to the US, although its exports fell by 31% to 4,524,000 net tonnes. Brazil followed with 4,126,000 net tonnes, a decrease of 8%. Mexico and South Korea also saw declines in their shipments to the US.

## December Import Trends

In December 2025, the US imported 1,577,000 net tonnes of steel, with finished steel accounting for 1,160,000 net tonnes. While total imports decreased by 3.8% from November, finished steel imports rose by 6.9%.

## Product-Specific Increases

Certain steel products experienced significant month-on-month increases in December. Reinforcing bars saw a 135% rise, while cut lengths of plates increased by 68%. Plates in coils and hot-rolled bars also saw notable increases.

## India's Growing Market Presence

The sharp rise in steel shipments from India underscores its expanding role in the US market, amidst ongoing trade measures and supply chain discussions.
