Uganda suspends travel to DR Congo over Ebola outbreak

## Travel Restrictions Implemented

Uganda has temporarily suspended all public transport to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) following a significant Ebola outbreak in the eastern Ituri province, which shares a border with Uganda. This decision, announced by the health ministry, affects all forms of public transport, including ferries and cross-border buses, for a duration of four weeks. However, cargo and food transport are not affected by this suspension.

## Ebola Outbreak Details

The outbreak in the DRC has been declared an international emergency by the World Health Organisation (WHO). The Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, responsible for the current epidemic, has no available vaccine or clinical treatment. The virus is suspected to have resulted in 160 deaths out of approximately 671 probable cases in the DRC, according to the National Institute for Public Health.

## Uganda's Response

Uganda has reported two suspected Ebola cases involving Congolese nationals, but there are currently no active cases in the country. The health ministry emphasized the high risk of further importation due to Uganda's proximity to the outbreak's epicenter and strong cross-border connections. As a precautionary measure, all flights to the DRC have also been temporarily halted, with the suspension taking effect within 48 hours.

## International Measures

In response to the outbreak, the United States has increased screening of air passengers from the DRC, Uganda, and South Sudan. Additionally, Bahrain has imposed a month-long ban on visitors from these countries.
