## Government Seeks Clarification from Meta
The Indian government has issued a notice to Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, regarding the messaging app's proposed username feature. Authorities are concerned that this update could potentially be exploited by scammers and fraudsters. Meta has been given three days to provide a detailed explanation of how the feature will function and its implications for user safety.
## Feature Details and Concerns
The new feature would allow WhatsApp users to communicate using unique usernames instead of sharing phone numbers, similar to platforms like Telegram. While WhatsApp claims this enhances privacy, officials worry it might enable fraudsters to hide their identities and target users more easily. The government has instructed Meta not to launch the feature in India until discussions are concluded.
## Regulatory Compliance and Security Measures
The introduction of this feature raises questions about compliance with Indian regulations, which mandate messaging platforms to be linked to verified mobile numbers. Under the Telecom Cyber Security Rules, 2024, strict SIM-verification measures are in place to combat online fraud. Cybersecurity experts have also highlighted the need for robust safeguards to prevent misuse of the username system.
## Awaiting Meta's Response
As of now, Meta has not publicly responded to the government's notice. The situation underscores the importance of balancing innovation with security and regulatory compliance in the digital communication space.
