Big wildfires hit southern France

## Firefighters Battle Blazes

Southern France is grappling with large wildfires, prompting evacuations in the Herault and Aude regions. Hundreds of firefighters have been deployed to combat the flames, which have been exacerbated by dry conditions and strong winds.

## Challenging Conditions

The fires, which began on July 1, 2026, have already consumed 800 hectares. Firefighters are facing tough conditions due to the hilly terrain and lack of access routes. Water-dumping aircraft are being utilized to aid in controlling the spread.

## Evacuations and Impact

Approximately 200 residents have been evacuated or confined in the areas of Pouzols-Minervois and Mailhac. The thick smoke has made conditions unbearable for those in the vicinity, leading to urgent evacuations.

## Additional Fires

In addition to the main blaze, smaller fires have been reported near Marseille, in Rognac and Lancon-Provence. These incidents come on the heels of a severe heatwave affecting much of Europe, with temperatures around 30°C contributing to the fire risk.
