## Nationwide Protests
Tens of thousands of demonstrators took to the streets in various French cities to protest against sexual violence. This widespread movement was ignited by the tragic case of Lyhanna, an 11-year-old girl who was raped and murdered. Her body was discovered in Fleurance after she went missing in late May.
## Calls for Reform
The suspect in Lyhanna's case, a 41-year-old man, had previously faced accusations of child rape, but investigations were either dropped or stalled. This has led to public outrage and demands for the resignation of Justice Minister Gerald Darmanin, who has apologized for what he termed a "huge failure."
## Public Outcry
In Paris, protesters carried placards and chanted slogans highlighting the plight of child victims. Organizers claimed that 100,000 people participated in the Paris march, marking it as a significant mobilization against sexual violence.
## Systemic Issues
Eline, a 17-year-old participant, shared her experience of filing a rape complaint that was dismissed by authorities. Anne-Cecile Mailfert, president of the Women's Foundation, criticized the judicial system for failing victims, noting that 94% of rape complaints are dismissed without further action.
## Coalition Demands
The protests were organized by a coalition of 180 associations, advocating for comprehensive legislation to address sexual violence. They argue that current measures are insufficient and call for reforms that encompass prevention and victim support.
## Government Response
President Emmanuel Macron expressed concern over the public's trust in institutions due to investigative failures in Lyhanna's case. A 2022 report highlighted the lack of resources and time to thoroughly investigate child abuse allegations, with many cases not pursued beyond initial suspect questioning.
