Egypt discovers sealed tombs and 24 gold tongue amulets at ancient coastal city

## Discovery at Marina El Alamein

Egyptian archaeologists have made a significant discovery at the ancient coastal city of Marina El Alamein, located on Egypt's northwestern Mediterranean coast. The team uncovered 18 ancient tombs, including 11 rock-cut tombs and seven limestone tombs, along with a granite sarcophagus and 24 gold tongue amulets.

## Sealed Tombs and Artefacts

The tombs, some carved to a depth of eight meters, were found in a remarkable state of preservation, with original stone slabs still sealing their entrances. The site also revealed surface burials and a repurposed water well, indicating the city's diverse social fabric and the influence of ancient Egyptian funerary customs during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods.

## Gold Tongue Amulets

Among the notable finds were 24 gold tongue amulets placed in the mouths of some deceased individuals. This practice was believed to enable the dead to speak in the afterlife. Additionally, a gold Eye of Horus amulet, symbolizing protection, was discovered.

## Other Significant Finds

The excavation yielded a variety of artefacts, including pottery vessels, amphorae, oil lamps, and limestone altars. A limestone offering altar with a false door, an unfinished marble statue of Aphrodite, and a limestone funerary stele depicting a seated man with a bird were also found. A plaster Sphinx statue was uncovered nearby, highlighting the enduring influence of Egyptian traditions.

## Cultural and Historical Significance

The discoveries at Marina El Alamein provide valuable insights into the cultural identity of its ancient inhabitants. The site continues to reveal new architectural features, underscoring its importance as a prominent ancient coastal settlement in the Mediterranean region. The Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, Sherif Fathy, emphasized the scientific and archaeological significance of these findings.
