## Mysterious Parasite Outbreak
A parasitic infection known as cyclosporiasis is causing concern across the United States, with hundreds of cases reported in 17 states. The infection, caused by the Cyclospora parasite, leads to severe diarrhea, often described as "explosive." Health officials are struggling to pinpoint the source of the outbreak.
## Investigations Underway
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), along with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and state health departments, are investigating the outbreak. Michigan is experiencing one of the largest outbreaks, with over 570 confirmed cases, significantly higher than the usual annual count of around 50. At least 20 individuals have been hospitalized, though no fatalities have been reported.
## Understanding Cyclospora
Cyclospora is a microscopic parasite that infects the small intestine. Infection occurs through consumption of contaminated food or water, often involving fresh produce like cilantro, basil, and berries. The parasite requires time in the environment to become infectious, making direct person-to-person transmission unlikely.
## Symptoms and Treatment
Symptoms typically appear about a week after exposure and include severe diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, and fatigue. The illness can last for weeks or months if untreated. The recommended treatment is the antibiotic trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX). Testing for Cyclospora is not routine, so specific requests may be necessary.
## Ongoing Challenges
Investigators have yet to identify a single contaminated food item or supplier, suggesting multiple sources. The CDC emphasizes the importance of understanding this threat to prevent further spread. Fresh produce has been linked to past outbreaks, as the parasite can survive on raw fruits and vegetables.
