UAE unveils breakthrough gene therapy projects to treat autism and rare brain disorders in children

## New Initiatives in Gene Therapy

The UAE has announced two innovative gene therapy projects aimed at addressing rare neurological and genetic disorders in children. These initiatives mark a shift from symptom management to targeting the root causes of diseases.

## Focus on Autism and Epilepsy

The first project is designed to tackle genetic factors associated with autism and epilepsy in children. It targets conditions like Beta-Propeller Protein-Associated Neurodegeneration (BPAN), which often begins with autism-like symptoms and seizures.

## Advanced Genetic Interventions

A second project will develop genetic interventions for neurodegenerative diseases. This includes repairing faulty genes and using advanced models to understand disease progression. Artificial intelligence will play a key role in identifying children at risk through the Emirati Genome Programme.

## Collaboration and Innovation

The projects are being developed in partnership with the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. This collaboration aims to combine international expertise with local research to enhance treatment options for affected children in the UAE.

## Strategic Healthcare Shift

Dr. Issam Al Zarooni from Emirates Health Services highlighted that these projects represent a strategic move towards innovative healthcare solutions. The focus is on improving quality of life and building local capabilities in advanced medicine.
