EGA restarts Al Taweelah alumina refinery after March suspension

## Restart of Al Taweelah Refinery

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) has resumed operations at its Al Taweelah alumina refinery in Abu Dhabi. This comes after a suspension of over three months due to Iranian attacks on the Khalifa Economic Zone. The refinery is expected to reach 50% of its production capacity within days.

## Future Production Plans

EGA aims to fully restore the refinery's output by the end of 2026. The timeline for achieving full capacity will depend on supply chain conditions and alumina sourcing strategies. Despite the refinery's current status, the ongoing ramp-up of aluminium production at the nearby Al Taweelah smelter remains unaffected.

## Importance of Al Taweelah

In 2025, the Al Taweelah refinery produced 2.4 million tonnes of alumina, fulfilling 46% of EGA’s requirements. Alumina is a crucial material for aluminium smelters. The refinery, which began operations in 2019, is strategically located next to EGA’s smelter, allowing efficient transfer of alumina via a conveyor system.

## CEO's Remarks

Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, CEO of EGA, highlighted the significance of resuming production, marking it as a major milestone in restoring the Al Taweelah site to its prominent position in global aluminium production. He praised the team's dedication and agility in achieving this milestone safely and swiftly.
