## A Journey of Hope and Resilience
Guido De Wilde, a 68-year-old cancer survivor from the UAE, is leading a remarkable cycling expedition across Europe. Starting from Barcelona on July 1, Guido and his team of 15 riders aim to cover 3,333 kilometers, reaching Paris by the end of July. This ambitious journey is not just about the distance; it's a mission to raise funds for cancer research and patient care through the Al Jalila Foundation.
## A Team United by Purpose
The team, known as Cycle Against Cancer, includes cancer survivors, business leaders, and cycling enthusiasts, many of whom ride in memory of loved ones affected by cancer. Thirteen members are based in the UAE, with two joining from abroad. Their collective effort has already raised approximately $622,000 for charity.
## Guido's Personal Battle
Guido's own battle with stage 4 colon cancer began during the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite undergoing chemotherapy, he remained active, training at home and maintaining a rigorous fitness routine. His determination to stay active led him to retire from his corporate career in 2021, focusing instead on fundraising and cycling challenges.
## Building on Past Success
This is not Guido's first fundraising endeavor. In May 2022, he completed a solo ride from Brussels to Bergamo, raising $100,000 for the same cause. Now, his efforts have expanded into a larger team challenge, nearly tripling the distance.
## A Message of Hope
Guido hopes the ride will inspire others facing similar battles. "Hope isn't just a word; it's something you can physically carry across a continent," he says. The team rides not only for themselves but for those they have lost or who are still fighting cancer, aiming to spread a message of resilience and hope.
