Europe's defence firms unite to build missile interceptor amid rising security threats

## European Defence Collaboration

In a significant move to enhance Europe's missile defense capabilities, five major defense companies have joined forces to create an advanced missile interceptor system. This initiative, known as the Bliksem EXO project, aims to develop an exo-atmospheric interceptor capable of neutralizing medium- and intermediate-range ballistic missiles.

## Bliksem EXO Project

The Bliksem EXO project was officially launched in Paris, with representatives from Airbus Defence and Space, Destinus, MBDA Deutschland, Safran Electronics & Defense, and Thales signing a Letter of Intent. This agreement marks the formation of the Bliksem EXO Consortium, which will focus on designing, testing, and eventually manufacturing the interceptor system.

## Interception Technology

Unlike traditional missile defense systems, the Bliksem EXO is designed to intercept threats while they are still in space, during the midcourse phase of their flight. The system employs a hit-to-kill approach, aiming to destroy incoming missiles through direct impact rather than explosive warheads.

## Strategic Importance

This development comes amid growing security concerns in Europe, with the new system intended to counter emerging threats, including advanced missile systems. The project underscores Europe's commitment to bolstering its defense infrastructure in response to evolving global security challenges.
