UAE's Traffic Law: Severe penalties for drunk driving and narcotic substance use

## New Traffic Law Overview

The UAE has introduced stringent measures under Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024 to address driving under the influence of alcohol and narcotics. Effective from March 29, 2025, the law imposes severe penalties, including fines, imprisonment, and driving licence suspensions.

## Alcohol-Related Offenses

Motorists caught driving under the influence of alcohol face imprisonment and fines ranging from Dh20,000 to Dh100,000. Additionally, driving licences are suspended for three months on a first offense, six months for a second, and cancelled on a third.

## Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances

For those driving under the influence of narcotics or psychotropic substances, penalties include imprisonment and fines between Dh30,000 and Dh200,000. Licence suspensions are six months for a first offense, one year for a second, and cancellation for a third.

## Consequences of Driving with a Suspended Licence

Driving with a suspended licence results in a three-month jail term and a fine of Dh10,000.

## Fatal Accidents

If a driver causes a fatal accident while intoxicated or under the influence of drugs, they face a minimum fine of Dh100,000 and/or at least one year in jail.
