German military to withdraw two vessels from Red Sea: defence ministry

## Withdrawal of German Vessels

Germany has decided to pull two naval ships from the Red Sea, as announced by the Defense Ministry. This decision follows recent diplomatic progress between the United States and Iran, reducing the need for a potential mine-clearing mission in the Strait of Hormuz.

## Details of the Deployment

The vessels, a Fulda minehunter and the support ship Mosel, were stationed in Djibouti since June. They were on standby with around 140 personnel, including mine-clearance divers and force protection teams, in case of any mining activities by Iran in the crucial oil shipping lane.

## Diplomatic Considerations

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius emphasized that any deployment into the Strait would have required political and diplomatic agreements, particularly with Iran and Oman. The ships were part of a European initiative to ensure safe navigation rather than engage in combat.

## Ongoing Operations

Despite the withdrawal, Germany remains active in the European Union's Operation Aspides, aimed at protecting commercial vessels in the Red Sea from Houthi attacks. Additionally, Germany continues its naval support for the U.N. peacekeeping mission off Lebanon until the end of 2026.

## Regional Security Concerns

While the vessels are leaving, Germany warns that the Middle East's security situation is still unstable. Houthi attacks on commercial ships persist, and there is ongoing concern about potential escalations between the U.S. and Iran that could threaten shipping routes in the region.
