## New Tariffs Announced
The United States has introduced new tariffs affecting 60 trading partners, replacing a previous global duty. These tariffs, ranging from 10% to 12.5%, target major economies such as China, India, and the European Union.
## Forced Labor and Legal Challenges
The tariffs are linked to bans on forced labor imports, aiming to withstand potential legal challenges. The Trump administration has moved to reestablish tariffs after a Supreme Court decision earlier this year invalidated several duties.
## Impact on Global Trade
Countries with forced labor bans, like Canada and the EU, face a 10% tariff, while others, including China and Japan, are subject to a 12.5% rate. Some nations, such as Japan and Australia, have criticized the new measures.
## Exemptions and Ongoing Investigations
Certain goods, including steel, aluminum, and products under the US-Mexico-Canada trade agreement, are exempt from these tariffs. The US is also investigating 16 economies for industrial overcapacity, which could lead to further duties.
## Strategic Moves
The administration's strategy maintains leverage over trading partners and encourages compliance with existing trade agreements. This approach is expected to sustain tariffs throughout Trump's term, signaling a more protectionist stance by the US.
