## Tejas Jet Incident

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has grounded its fleet of Tejas light combat aircraft following a runway mishap earlier this month. The incident, which occurred during a routine training sortie on February 7, involved a Tejas jet overshooting the runway due to a suspected brake failure. Fortunately, the pilot ejected safely without serious injury.

## Previous Accidents

This recent event marks the third accident involving the Tejas jets. The first incident happened in March 2024 near Jaisalmer, where the pilot also ejected safely. The second crash occurred during the Dubai Airshow in November 2025, resulting in the death of the pilot. Investigations into the Dubai crash are still ongoing.

## Delays in Tejas Mk1A Deliveries

The grounding of the Tejas fleet comes amid delays in the delivery of the upgraded Tejas Mk1A jets. Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has faced setbacks in meeting delivery schedules, primarily due to engine supply issues from GE Aerospace. The Defence Ministry had signed a significant contract with HAL in February 2021 for 83 Mk1A jets, followed by another deal in September 2025 for 97 additional aircraft. However, deliveries are nearly two years behind schedule.

## Tejas Capabilities

The Tejas is a single-engine, multi-role fighter designed for various missions, including air defense and maritime reconnaissance. Developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency, it is intended to operate in high-threat environments. The IAF has yet to release an official statement regarding the latest accident.
