## Mojtaba Khamenei's Stance on Nuclear Weapons
US intelligence suggests that Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is more inclined towards developing nuclear weapons compared to his father, Ali Khamenei. This assessment is based on pre-war intelligence, including wiretapped communications, indicating Mojtaba's reduced caution regarding nuclear armament.
## Background and Current Developments
Ali Khamenei, who was perceived as more reserved on nuclear issues, was killed in a joint US-Israeli airstrike in February. The evaluation of Mojtaba's stance is derived from earlier intelligence, not new data post his rise to power.
Western intelligence has consistently challenged Iran's claims of a peaceful nuclear program, while Israel asserts that Iran has made significant strides towards weaponization. The US believes that factions within Iran advocating for nuclear deterrence have gained influence, arguing it is necessary to prevent future military threats.
## Underground Nuclear Activities
Reports indicate that Iran has moved thousands of centrifuges to a fortified underground site near Natanz, known as Pickaxe Mountain. This facility is reportedly resistant to aerial attacks, and Iran has denied International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors access to the site.
Iranian officials, however, maintain that their nuclear activities comply with international obligations. Despite this, the IAEA noted Iran's plans to conduct operations at the site as early as 2021.
## Regional Tensions
Tensions between the US and Iran have escalated following the collapse of a truce and a failed diplomatic effort in June. The US has intensified its aerial operations, while Iran has retaliated with missile and drone attacks on American bases.
In 2025, the US targeted key Iranian nuclear sites, including Fordo and Natanz, which are crucial for uranium enrichment. Iran insists its nuclear goals are peaceful, but IAEA data shows significant uranium enrichment, nearing weapons-grade levels.
