Philippine customs warns OFWs against free tours, job offers used in drug smuggling

## Warning to Overseas Filipino Workers

The Philippine Bureau of Customs (BOC) has issued a warning to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) about a new drug smuggling tactic. Syndicates are reportedly offering free tours or job opportunities abroad as a cover to transport illegal drugs.

## Recent Incident

This alert follows the arrest of a passenger at an international airport for carrying approximately 4,008 grams of methamphetamine, known locally as "shabu." The drugs, hidden in the passenger's hand luggage, have an estimated value of ₱27,254,400.

## Importance of Vigilance

BOC Commissioner Ariel Nepomuceno emphasized the need for strong inter-agency cooperation to prevent airports from being used by drug traffickers. OFWs, who frequently travel for work, are particularly targeted by these schemes.

## Safety Measures

The BOC advises OFWs to verify the legitimacy of recruiters and employers, review travel documents carefully, and never allow others to place items in their luggage. Suspicious activities should be reported to the BOC and the Department of Migrant Workers.

## Protecting Travelers

With millions of Filipinos traveling annually, officials stress the importance of vigilance to protect travelers from becoming victims of international drug trafficking networks.
